Born on 25th May 1921 [Rothbury, Northumberland 10b:1089], the son of Francis Sherd and Maggie Ann KIRKPATRICK (née GREIG).
His mother died towards the end of 1938, in Newmarket.

His Japanese PoW card gives his occupation as Retailing Tradesman, his mother as Margaret Kirkpatrick of 10 Field Terrace Road, Newmarket.
He was captured at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese on 15th February 1942. James died of debility at Chungkai, Thailand, as a prisoner of war of the Japanese on the Burma railway. Chungkai had a hospital and was supposedly far from the worst camp on the railway. It was only 5 km from the bridges at Tamarkan James was originally buried in Chungkai Cemetery Extension but moved into Chungkai War Cemetery on 13th August 1948. |
